Patricio G. Schlottmann, MD, is a distinguished ophthalmologist and researcher in the field of ophthalmology. He currently holds dual leadership roles as the Director of the Research Department at the Charles Ophthalmic Center and as the Ophthalmology Department Director at Organización Médica de Investigación in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Schlottmann’s career is marked by a dedication to advancing ophthalmic research and patient care, making him a respected figure in Latin America and internationally.
Dr. Schlottmann’s medical journey began at the University of Buenos Aires, where he earned his MD. Following this, he pursued specialized training in ophthalmology, completing his post-graduate studies at Santa Lucía’s Ophthalmic Hospital and El Salvador University, in Buenos Aires, where he was awarded his specialist degree in 2003. To further enhance his expertise, he undertook a 6-year research fellowship at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, UK. His passion for clinical research led him to deepen his skills in Clinical Trial Design at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and later through a Medical Retina fellowship at Organización Médica de Investigación.
With over two decades of experience, Dr. Schlottmann has made substantial contributions to the field of ophthalmology, leading over 35 clinical research studies as a Principal Investigator. His research efforts extend beyond academic trials; he has played a key role in establishing innovative research methodologies and partnerships. In a bid to elevate the standards of ophthalmology research across Latin America, Dr. Schlottmann founded the RIO (Research In Ophthalmology) LATAM initiative, a groundbreaking effort that brought together a network of more than 35 clinical research sites spanning Argentina, Brazil and Colombia. This initiative has not only accelerated the pace of clinical trials in the region but has also fostered collaboration among leading experts in ophthalmic research.
Dr. Schlottmann’s scholarly work is widely recognized, with over 60 scientific publications to his name and more than 4000 citations in peer-reviewed journals, and an h index of 26. His insights are frequently sought by leading medical journals where he serves as a peer reviewer and editorial board member. Beyond his editorial contributions, Dr. Schlottmann is actively involved in shaping the future of ophthalmology as a member of the Executive Committee for the Argentinean Vitreous Retina Society. His expertise is also valued on the global stage, where he serves as an advisor to various industry stakeholders, helping to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and clinical application.
